Free Software in Commercial Solutions

The core building blocks of our solutions are are developed with the Open Source process and are licensed as Free Software.

However, this does not rule out the integration of proprietary modules: since most solutions are implemented within existing architectures, our systems are designed to provide the required flexibility to integrate components smoothly.

Diversity

To address any concerns about sustainability and availability of Open Source based solutions, it may be worth mentioning that the leading implementations in the WebGIS domain are based on Open Source software. Open Source solutions have established a leading market position in several sectors, one example being the Apache Webserver software.

OSGeo aims at establishing market leadership for Open Source based technology with Free Software licenses. At the same time it will make sure that it represents a healthy diversity of programming languages and different user domains. 

Standardization and Interoperability

We guarantee high interoperability of our solutions by adhering to standards defined by OGC, W3C, OASIS, ISO and other standardization organisations.

An emerging term in discussions about interoperability is "interoptability". This is not a typo but refers to a mashup of the terms "interoperability", "option", "optics", and "ability". Thus "Interoptability" provides you with freedom of choice to address diverse issues with focused solutions and stay standards compatible.
